Why AI Cannot Replace The Human Touch
Updated: Jan 16, 2025
AI Overview and Benefits
There are AI-powered tools and chatbots all over the internet. Many AI tools also have specializations. For example, some are good for coding, while others are better at creative writing or research. In general, AI is useful for:
Quickly generating images and basic code.
Speeding up research by quickly summarizing key information and providing comparisons. For example, an AI-powered chatbot can provide a table comparing and differentiating cloud orchestration tools.
Generating ideas to help overcome writer’s block.
Helping medical professionals diagnose challenging conditions.
Use Case 1: How AI helps physicians
I know someone who struggles with hypermobility, which results in loose joints and ligaments. For the sake of privacy, I will refer to him as N. N’s physician knew that hypermobility could cause problems. She tried to do research, but couldn’t find much. This is where AI came in handy. The patient described his issues to the AI tool, and it explained how the symptoms match a milder version of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. N’s physician now has the information needed to provide an official diagnosis and start formulating a treatment plan.
Use Case 2: How AI is useful for planning a major renovation
A couple needs to renovate their basement on a budget and tight timeline. They decided to use ChatGPT to get ideas. They inputted their budget and described exactly what needs to be done in the basement. ChatGPT provided links to DIY videos and other online resources. It also provided a comparison table so the couple could decide whether to install carpets or tiles, and what kind. In addition to costs, each flooring option has pros and cons. AI quickly provided information and options, so the couple is now in a better position to decide how to proceed with the renovation.
Limitations of AI and Why It Cannot Replace Many Jobs
AI is a useful tool, but it is not perfect and it needs human guidance most of the time. There is a lot of hype surrounding AI and concern that it will take away people's jobs. However, there are a lot of jobs that AI cannot replace right now – and it might never be able to. AI can be quicker than a human with repetitive tasks that it is programmed to do. AI excels at pattern recognition and it processes data efficiently. It can handle boring data entry tasks that people don’t have the patience for, but you need to provide exact instructions. AI cannot think outside the box.
If you have used ChatGPT, you have probably seen a message at the bottom of your screen saying that ChatGPT can make mistakes, and it definitely does. Its memory is also flawed, so it can give you contradictory information. AI tends to miss obvious information until you prompt or question it, and it tends to give a lot of generic advice that might not actually be useful to you. In other words, it has a lot of trouble with context.
At its core, Artificial Intelligence isn't truly intelligent. AI is based on large language models. It can quickly find data online and it also tries to rewrite information, but because it can’t analyze context like a human, the information it writes isn’t always accurate. It can change the meaning while summarizing information, and it always strives to hyper-optimize content to the point of eventually making it worse. For example, AI cannot replace a diligent, detail-oriented technical writer. It can help to speed up research, but the technical writer still needs to validate and test the information. Copying and pasting AI-generated text is also a mistake. A good writer uses a varied writing style, while AI excels at repetition. AI also doesn’t understand how much information is necessary, so it tends to either over-simplify or over-complicate information. A good technical writer or content creator will understand the nuance and do a better job of gauging the needs of their target audience.
Similarly, AI cannot replace a project or program manager. Projects rarely go exactly as planned, so project managers need to adapt and prepare for the unexpected. AI is not good at this.
AI’s Role in Customer Service and Manufacturing
AI can replace or reduce the need for humans in certain customer service and manufacturing roles.
Manufacturing:
AI-powered robots are good at performing repetitive physical tasks, such as assembly, welding, and packaging, with a high degree of precision and consistency. Automated assembly lines can replace human workers, saving costs and maximizing efficiency. AI can also monitor machinery for wear and tear. Through predictive algorithms, AI can determine when a failure is about to occur, or notice faults and defects more effectively than human workers. As a result, the problem can be addressed quickly, reducing downtime. When properly programmed, AI can also pick up repetitive tools and workflows quickly, while people need more training and time to adjust.
Customer Service:
AI-powered chatbots and voice assistants can handle simple queries quickly, so a call center might not need as many human agents. Chatbots tend to provide immediate responses and AI voice assistants can significantly reduce a customer’s wait time. AI can also provide 24-hour service, so customers can still get simple assistance during off hours. AI is also useful for overcoming language barriers – it is not always possible to find people who speak every language.
However, AI tends to struggle when customers have more complicated questions or a unique situation. As outlined above, AI does not understand context. We’ve all experienced calling a business and finding that the AI-powered voice assistant doesn’t understand the problem. At this point, the call should be transferred to a person right away. Otherwise, AI is no longer improving customer service. To provide efficient and cost-effective customer service, businesses need to find the balance between what AI can and cannot do, and for the sake of customer satisfaction, give customers the option of talking to a person even if it means a longer wait time.
Other Service Jobs:
AI-powered tools allow people to efficiently order food at a restaurant, saving money for the business. However, AI cannot replace a waiter or bartender. People often want to talk to their bartender, and AI cannot provide the empathy and human connection customers want. There are plenty of service roles that require a human touch.
New Opportunities
AI is also creating jobs. People need to input data and train different AI models. There are more opportunities in tech support and other jobs opening up for people who can monitor and maintain AI tools.
Conclusion
In this age of AI, people need to keep their skills sharp and be open to continuous learning, but AI cannot replace human empathy, analysis, and critical thinking. While AI can automate certain tasks, there are many jobs it cannot replace.
